A note from the director

Choosing a play to perform at St Lawrence has become increasingly difficult over the years. This is our 220th production so we wanted to find something new and challenging that we hadn't performed before.

Our very own Revlon Girl, Charlotte, studied in Cardiff and returned there to see her university friends in a production of the show in early 2023. Amazed by the "brilliant piece of theatre" and the raw emotion of the show, she asked me to consider directing the play at St Lawrence.

I was immediately taken aback by the quality of the writing and the way the play encapsulates the poignancy and loss of those mothers who said goodbye to their children one morning, never to see them again.

The play tells the real-life story of a group of bereaved mothers who met every week above a local hotel to talk, cry and even laugh without feeling guilty.

Although a difficult subject to tackle, the play portrays the disaster with empathy, providing a story of soul searching, tears and laughter.

The cast have been excellent throughout. From the very outset, they embraced the subject, watching documentaries on the disaster and researching about the events that occurred on that fateful day. Each character in the play represents the emotions felt by those mothers who witnessed the tragedy unfold. Each cast member has portrayed their character perfectly.

I would like to thank everyone in Players for supporting me in bringing this production to the stage. It has, as always, been a team effort. A special thank-you for Cathy and her amazing sound effects, for Duncan on lighting and for Alison and Garry who sourced the props and ensured that the production has run smoothly.

I hope you enjoy the play; it demonstrates that even in the most difficult times, love, hope and friendship help humanity survive.
